This is an original and beautiful 25 inch by 45 inch hand-painted and hand incised wood framed work of art -and containing a wonderful hand hammered copper repousse panel of the iconic Bethlehem Shephard Boy Flute Player. It was created by one of America’s important turn of the last century arts and crafts artisans, William Fuller Curtis.
The frame is signed verso with the monogram WFC 1904.

The unique wood frame is hand-incised and then hand painted in stains and oils in great detail using pyrographic techniques. We have never seen anything finer than this example.

Hand painted and hand burned using pyrographic techniques by one of America’s great master 19th/20th century pyrographic artisans

History of the Pyrography:
py·rog·ra·phy pi’rägr?fe/ noun is the art or technique of decorating wood or leather by burning a design on the surface with a heated metallic point. Pyrography was particular popular during the last quarter of the 19th century and first quarter of the 20th century
About William F. Curtis (1873-1938)
American artist William Fuller Curtis (1873–1938) like J. William Fosdick before him, studied art at the Académie Julian in Paris. William Fuller Curtis was born in 1873 in New York, studied in Paris at the Julian Academy under Lefebvre and Fleury, and later returned to work in Washington D.C. His works are in many museums and private collections. He died in 1938. (Thank you to the Pyromuse)
