This is an authentic Chinese ancient jade mythical winged lion, “pixiu” dating to the Han Dynasty period 206BC–220AD. It is seldom seen jade hand carved in large scale.
Substantial Dimensions: 7 inches length and 2.5 inches high, heavy to hold
There is ample evidence of original and ancient calcification, polishing and surface encrustation- also an ancient crack repair on the lower neck, all evidence to support its creation in antiquity.
Jades from this period are handmade, engraved using metal tools which were available at that time, and then hand polished. This type of larger scale polished jade mythical animal was created for important wealthy individuals including royalty.
This comes from an old New York private collection.

History of Pixiu
Pixiu (Chinese: 貔貅; pinyin: píxiū; Wade–Giles: P’i-hsiu), is a Chinese mythical hybrid creature, commonly (but incorrectly) referred to in the West by the Greek word “chimera”, and considered a powerful protector of practitioners of Feng Shui. It resembles a strong, winged lion.
