China important ancient standing figure of Buddha, limestone, 60″h. x 19″w. x 10″deep, Tang Dynasty (618-907AD), superb patina with original traces of ancient gold gilding
the serene figure shown standing with right hand raised in Varadamudra and left hand extended in sign of charity and compassion, wearing a simple dhoti with ten folds, the right shoulder exposed, the back of the sculpture carved fully in the round, the face well modeled in an expression of quiet contemplation the whole set upon a two layered lotus base with feet and toes exposed, the stone with multiple layers of lacquer, paint, and generous remnants of gold gilding.

In his discussion of this Buddha, a Buddha scholar Qing states the “figure has a strong influence from India and can be dated in, circa 700 CE during the Tang period. He has typical Tang stylistic characteristics. But compared with many Tang sculptures, this figure has more influence from India, especially the exposed right arm and right shoulder. It should be produced in the North, probably from Chang’an, present day Xi’an City in Shaanxi Province, or west of the city.”
