About Japan’s wooden rice measuring buckets called an Itomasu
Utilized as a specific unit of rice (one masu)- this bucket was a standard used by rice stores throughout Japan in the late Meiji and Taisho eras. The bucket held approximately 18 liters, about 40 lbs of rice. There is a stamp branded on the side with the rice store’s name. Many additional smaller stamps can also sometimes be seen as official symbols given by government officials who have checked and approved this bucket to be an exact standard unit- one itomasu.
After a century of careful use they still have a warm aged patina, ready for your use and another 100 years.
You’ll love them.
Sculpted Double handles complete their authentic look. They are a perfect choice for your indoor or outdoor garden spaces.
