China, this is a beautiful tall naturally found 21 inch Scholar Rock Viewing Stone Lingbi and it comes mounted in a custom hand-carved wood base.
Good garden candidate and superb indoor sculpture
Provenance: Old Shanghai collection acquired 1998.
Our tall natural specimen comes from a forty year old private Chinese collection. This example would make a perfect garden or provocative indoor installation. Please see below for more historical information about these fascinating works of art.
History of Lingbi Garden Viewing Stones:
Lingbi stones are also called ‘resonant rocks’ (bayinshi). They were sometimes used for making chimes and are thus also known as ‘chime rocks’. Lingbi rocks are beautiful and clear-cut, with a frame of soft lines.
They are now hard to find as harvesting them oin China is now prohibited.
