Japan, a beautiful and unusual four-panel screen Byobu with 12 hand embroidered Butterflies -Shushu- applied to its blue sky colored silk cloth surface and finished with a powdered gold mist in the back ground. It has been nicely framed in rich red lacquer.
Dimensions, comfortable reasonable size: 36 inches high and 60 inches wide
Period: Taisho period, 1912-1926.
History:
Due to the war years 1933-1945 much of Japans artistic records were lost though the epic Taisho era and unique works of art like this screen was handmade possibly for an important commission. This work of art represents an important bridge from Taisho to Showa period art forms combining the best of Showa’s sedate attitude with the lofty, airy, and realistic ideals of Taisho.
A rare find.
Hand sewn -Shushu- screens like this one are few and far between. The butterflies subject matter is rarer still.
