History of Japanese fishing floats:
In Japanese, glass floats are variably known as buoy balls (浮き玉, ukidama) or glass balls (ビン玉, bindama). Japan’s fishing fleet started using glass floats around 1910, and glass replaced most other materials used for floats by the 1940’s. Glass fishing floats were used by 19th and 20th century fishermen in the North Atlantic and North Pacific to hold the tops of their nets afloat. Old glass floats will show signs of use, and impurities, chips, dings, or bubbles. Some have an embossed identicfication seal on them.
