A rare find, this is 150 year old bronze 9 ring “Hoju” finial temple ornament (sorin) could make a wonderful indoor or outdoor sculpture for your special sun room, deck, or garden space.
Hōju 宝珠 is a Buddhist sacred jewel.
Coming from a private collection , this large 62″ tall antique hand cast bronze bronze temple finial with exquisite details dates to the late Edo or early Meiji period, 19th century. It reportedly is from Nara region and in fact if you google Nara temples you will find a similiar “9 ring” finial adorning one of its most sacred Buddhist temple buildings at Horyu-ji. Hōryū-ji (Temple of the Flourishing Law). This Buddhist temple was once one of the powerful Seven Great Temples, in Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture, Japan. Its full name is Hōryū Gakumonji (法隆学問寺), or Learning Temple of the Flourishing Law, the complex serving as both a seminary and monastery. The temple’s pagoda is widely acknowledged to be the oldest wooden building existing in the world, underscoring Hōryū-ji’s place as one of the most celebrated temples in Japan.
This finial ornament consists of different sections from top to bottom:
the sacred jewel (hoju)
dragon wheel (ryusha)
water flame (suien)
sacred rings (horin)
flower bowl (ukebana)
Reversed bowl (fukubachi)
Dew basin (roban)
This bronze temple finial ornament is the first of its kind we have had the pleasure of handling.
It possesses a fine old patina from good age.
