Meiji Period (1868 – 1912)
Exquisite antique Meiji Period carved wood statue depicting a lifelike monkey clutching an immortal peach. Superb quality and detail. The artisan was well acquainted with monkeys as is evident in the magnificent character of the figure. The face, hands and peach pair are exceptionally expressive almost life like. One almost wonders what it is thinking. This older monkey exhibits a wise and carefree expression and a natural, monkey-like posture. Quite extraordinary.
The statue is of significant age, dating to the Meiji Period, late 1800s.
Wonderful from any angle, including the reverse. A true work of art representing Japan’s bygone era and the aesthetic of the Shogun and Samurai. This magnificent statue measures approximately 6″ wide. Would make a superb addition for the connoisseur of world class Asian antiques. The perfect acquisition for 2016, the Asian year of the Monkey.
