A pair of near mint quality hand cast bronze dragon and elephant handled ikebana vases.
The bronze vases Usubata crafted in two sections.
Dimensions: 10 inches tall and 12 inches diameter.
Provenance: Private Nagoya collection.
History of this form:
This type of bronze flower vase was used by the Ikenobo school, the oldest school of Japanese flower arrangement (Ikebana). Kyoto was the birthplace both of ikebana and of the bronze flower vessel, and scrolls dating from the second half of the 17th century show first examples of this most characteristic of Japanese bronze forms, the so-called futabana (two-flower) vase. With the re-opening of overseas contacts from 1850s, metal craftsmen and sword smiths manufactured many of these magnificent showpieces.
